THE WORD OF GOD SAYS
IGNORING THE NEEDS OF OTHERS
Don’t be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a person plants, he will harvest. The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others—ignoring God!—harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants in response to God, letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, eternal life.
Galatians 6:7-8 MSG
SOUL-EMPTY SELF-IMPORTANCE
“Look at that man, bloated by self-importance—full of himself but soul-empty. But the person in right standing before God through loyal and steady believing is fully alive, really alive.
Habakkuk 2:4 The Message (MSG)
THE ROOT OF SELF-INTEREST
My counsel is this: Live freely, animated and motivated by God’s Spirit. Then you won’t feed the compulsions of selfishness. For there is a root of sinful self-interest in us that is at odds with a free spirit, just as the free spirit is incompatible with selfishness. These two ways of life are antithetical, so that you cannot live at times one way and at times another way according to how you feel on any given day. Why don’t you choose to be led by the Spirit and so escape the erratic compulsions of a law-dominated existence?
Galatians 5:16-18 The Message (MSG)
THE MORE YOU GET…
When you grab all you can get, that’s what happens: the more you get, the less you are.
Proverbs 1:8-19 The Message (MSG)
JESUS WASN’T SELFISH
He died without a thought for his own welfare, beaten bloody for the sins of my people. They buried him with the wicked, threw him in a grave with a rich man, Even though he’d never hurt a soul or said one word that wasn’t true.
Isaiah 53:7-9 The Message (MSG)
STINGY PEOPLE
Wicked borrows and never returns; Righteous gives and gives. Generous gets it all in the end; Stingy is cut off at the pass.
Psalm 37:21-22 The Message (MSG)
I WANT MORE, MORE, AND MORE
Why is everyone hungry for more ? “More, more,” they say. “More, more.” I have God’s more-than-enough, More joy in one ordinary day Than they get in all their shopping sprees. At day’s end I’m ready for sound sleep, For you, God , have put my life back together.
Psalm 4:6-7, 7-8 The Message (MSG)
WANTING YOUR OWN WAY ALL THE TIME
Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world—wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important—has nothing to do with the Father. It just isolates you from him. The world and all its wanting, wanting, wanting is on the way out—but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity.
1 John 2:15-17 The Message (MSG)
DON’T EAT WITH SELFISH PEOPLE
Don’t eat with people who are stingy; don’t desire their delicacies. They are always thinking about how much it costs. “Eat and drink,” they say, but they don’t mean it.
Proverbs 23:6-7 New Living Translation (NLT)
STOP SPONGING OFF YOUR FRIENDS
You’ve heard all this from us before, but a reminder never hurts. We want you living in a way that will command the respect of outsiders, not lying around sponging off your friends.
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 MSG
THE SIMPLE EQUATION OF GOD’S KINGDOM
Less is more and more is less.
Psalm 37:16-17 MSG
THE ONE WHO GETS IT ALL IN THE END
Wicked borrows and never returns; Righteous gives and gives. Generous gets it all in the end; Stingy is cut off at the pass.
Psalm 37:21-22 MSG
A LIFESTYLE OF GIVING HAS AN IMPACT ON YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN
I once was young, now I’m a graybeard— not once have I seen an abandoned believer, or his kids out roaming the streets. Every day he’s out giving and lending, his children making him proud.
Psalm 37:25-26 MSG
STINGINESS CAN COST YOU EVERYTHING
Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything. The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.
Proverbs 11:24-25 NLT
STOP GRABBING WHATEVER ATTRACTS YOUR FANCY
And that means killing off everything connected with that way of death: sexual promiscuity, impurity, lust, doing whatever you feel like whenever you feel like it, and grabbing whatever attracts your fancy. That’s a life shaped by things and feelings instead of by God. It’s because of this kind of thing that God is about to explode in anger.
Colossians 3:5-8 MSG
LET GENEROSITY GOVERN YOUR LIFE[Live] as obedient children [of God]; do not be conformed to the evil desires which governed you in your ignorance [before you knew the requirements and transforming power of the good news regarding salvation].
